Ventriloquism’s History and Link To Spiritualism by Christina Steel.

Myself and my daughter got into a conversation about ventriloquist dummies and how creepy they are.

I researched its origins and discovered something quite disturbing! They believed the voices or noises coming from their stomachs were the voices of the unliving. Isn’t that quite disgusting? Especially when you think the stomach, or what we put into it, has effects on our health. That’s what sprung to my mind. Oh, and the thought of ‘the dead’ dwelling inside of me! Yuk! Even though I don’t believe these entities are dead humans.

I shared this with my very good friend Laura Maxwell and she asked me to write an article on the subject. This is my first article and I shall share what I have discovered with you.

The origins of the ventriloquist dummy are connected to Spiritualism by  Christina Steel.

Myself and my daughter were watching an episode of a well known comedy. It featured a Ventriloquist’s dummy. My daughter said, ”I believe they have a creepy background”.  So me being me, I Googled it and discovered a very dark history indeed!

Originally used as a religious practice by the Greeks, the word ventriloquism comes from Latin and it means ‘to speak from the stomach’. Venter means belly, and loqui means speak.

The noisesprojected from the ventriloquist’s stomach were thought to be the voices of the unliving, who were said to take up residence in the ventriloquist. The ventriloquist would then interpret the sounds. In doing so, he or she was speaking with allegedly ‘the dead’, to foretell the future.

The earliest group of prophets to do this were The Pythia, the priestess at a Temple of Apollo in Delphi. One of the most successful was Eurykles, a prophet at Athens. Gastromancers were to become referred to as Euryklides in his honour.

People in other parts of the world have also practised Ventriloquism, as a religious practice, or as part of a ritual such as the Zulu, Inuit and the Maori people.

It was used in the middle ages by people pretending to be mediums or claiming to be able to cast out evil spirits. Being able to throw their voices added to their credibility. Now this I found most disturbing… spiritualism led to stage magic and escapology. So, ventriloquism lost its mystical theme and was seen more as a performance art! This started around the 19th century.

During the 15th century, spiritualism became very popular. Séances, witchcraft and possession used vocal techniques that were very similar to ventriloquism and ventriloquists were even used in the assistance of exorcisms and séances!

Titles in the trailer for the 1964 film Devil Doll.

In the entertainment business, there are lots of comedians who use ventriloquism as an act. But as history tells us this practice is no laughing matter. The enemy will use any means necessary to entrap us, making things look very enticing indeed. I would like to point out that ventriloquist dummies have featured in many a horror film too. Looking at the history, this would certainly make sense. Messing around in the occult is a horror story you most certainly would want to stay away from.

Fred Russell and dummy ‘Coster Joe’, 1905.

Here are some images that quite frankly would be enough to warn us to stay away from this not so family friendly act of entertainment!

I think this poster speaks volumes about ventriloquism.

These images from horror movies with themes of ventriloquism should be enough to deter us all from this not so fun form of entertainment. We must protect ourselves and our families from such evil.

Most of those dolls are creepy but there are some that are not. Some even look quite pleasant. Maybe pleasant looking but when you know the whole truth, it puts a totally different perspective on things.

What Does The Bible Say?

As stated, during the middle ages, Ventriloquism was thought to be similar to witchcraft. I personally would say if  you believe you’re conversing with ‘the dead’, or channelling them via dolls, there is no doubt about it being witchcraft.

As it says in Leviticus 19:31  “Do not go for advice to people who consult the spirits of the dead. If you do, you will be ritually unclean. I am the Lord your God.”

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 You must never sacrifice your sons or daughters by burning them alive, practice black magic, be a fortune-teller, witch, or sorcerer, cast spells, ask ghosts or spirits for help, or consult the dead. Whoever does these things is disgusting to the Lord. The Lord your God is forcing these nations out of your way because of their disgusting practices.

Leviticus 20:6 I will condemn people who turn to mediums and psychics and chase after them as though they were prostitutes. I will exclude them from the people.

Revelation 22:15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

God will not be mocked; he speaks quite clearly here on what will happen should we go seeking out such practices.

Our Children.

What really sickens me is how the occult is presented to children, not just in cute furry formats but through such children’s TV programmes as ‘Goosebumps’. This is heartbreaking.
